Casa Grande Hotel Boutique
Casa Grande Morelia is a boutique hotel nestled in a majestic 18th-century residence, restored with the utmost respect for its architectural essence. Enjoy unique spaces, artisanal finishes, and panoramic views that make every stay a memorable experience.
Centuries of Tradition in the Heart of Morelia
In the 18th century, at the southern end of the “Ecce Homo” arcade, in the heart of Morelia, Michoacán, near its intersection with Calle del Comercio, Don Antonio Cacho de Herrera, a Spanish gentleman, built a house using very simple materials.
In 1723, the property was acquired by Don Domingo González Higareda, a councilman of the city of Zamora. He found the house completely in ruins and was forced to demolish it entirely and build a solid masonry residence in its place.
A Stately Home in Colonial Valladolid
In 1748, a gentleman named Joaquín de Mauleón is recorded as the owner of the property. He was responsible for adding the arcade facing the main square and enhancing the building’s façades.
In 1796, Don Isidro Huarte, a councilman of Valladolid, acquired the property and later passed it down to his great-grandson, Don Juan Gómez de Alzúa.
Don Juan transformed the residence into one of the most beautiful and opulent homes in the city of Valladolid. He commissioned a French-born blacksmith to create the elegant wrought-iron details found throughout the house and to incorporate his initials into the design.
To this day, this ironwork is considered among the most elegant in the city.
From Viceregal Residence to Boutique Hotel
By 1930, Don Miguel Herrejón had established a commercial center on the property, where grains such as corn, beans, wheat, and rice were sold, along with a wide variety of groceries.
The business also offered gasoline, oils, and automotive lubricants. Don Miguel also operated a distributorship for a beer brand, and the original mural from that period still remains on the property today.
The Revival of a Historic Landmark
The property was later acquired by the Pérez Gil González family, who lived there for many years.
In 2007, the house was sold once again, this time to the Rodríguez Herrejón brothers, who transformed the beautiful historic residence into a boutique hotel featuring 12 luxurious suites, a rooftop terrace with spectacular views, a restaurant in the former dining hall, and another restaurant beneath the arcade.
The restoration was carried out with the utmost respect for the building’s historic character by Gloria Álvarez, while Salvador Reyes and Josefina Larraín oversaw its refined interior decoration.
During the restoration process, several very old decorative frescoes were discovered and successfully preserved.
